Concept Development Tutorial / Move to LA.

I just got another tutorial posted on the AliasDesign Community site. It shows how I created the image in the last post. I'm pretty happy with it.

You can find the tutorial here.

I'll be moving to LA in 3 weeks, so crazy madness will be filling up most of my time until then. More than likely I won't be posting until I get settled in down there. I'll miss the Canadian falls, but will have no problem forgetting about shoveling.

SUH.

SID Master, lol

So I was featured in a series called
Master of SID in Michal Jelinek's Blog, DaVinci: Visual Library. (SID = Sketching in Design)

I was pretty surprised to be included, as the caliber of people he has for this blog is way up there.
Anyway here is the link...

And an image made for the post, but not included.

Nudes at work.

Sitting here in an empty office, I figured I would post some stuff I did at the Life Drawing session here on Wednesday. I forget the model's name, but she was very good at staying completely still.
I need some serious work on figuring out faces so that they dont look different in every image.

In case you're wondering: I do use a Bic 0.07 HB mechanical, by choice. lol.

Heading to Ottawa tonight for the weekend, again. This time is to visit the Carleton ID Exhibition.

Photoshop World 2008

Back from Orlando, FL. Finally.
The show was smaller than I had anticipated, but still a positive experience overall. I met some great people and got to work on some decent demos. Here are a couple samples of the works I did to promote the new release of SketchBook Pro.
I don't know why all I all the decent ones were gray scale cars, but that's how things go i guess.

It took 29 hours for me to get home, via air. After the whole ordeal, all I can express is, don't fly US airways. I made the mistake of going to the airport3 hours early
(Just for the air conditioning, more than anything. I am a true believer of showing up 45 minutes before a flight. That way, when you are confronted by long security lines, you can bypass right up to the front. I've never been in the Toronto airport more than a half hour before the security gates.)
Anyway, the flight before mine departed on time, and broke down right before lift off, so they had to deplane and board our plane. This somehow delayed our flight for 3 hours and cancelled any chances of connecting flights. So they put a bunch of us up in a Holiday Inn, and booked me in for a 7:40am flight the next day. At the hotel, I arranged for a wake up call, which didn't come through, and I ended up missing that flight by 3 hours. I weaseled/charmed my way into getting an extra long stay, free lunch, breakfast and movies as well as compensation for an alternate flight, which is a pretty big deal, from a nice lady named Cindy. After that, our 5:15 flight boarded on time, but a 20 minute rainstorm resulted in 2 hours and 22 minutes on the tarmac. After that, no hick ups.
On a side note, I guess someone noticed my digital painting tutorial and posted it on http://www.carbodydesign.com/. Last time I checked it had 570+ hits on the first day. Its the first tutorial on the main page.
And another side note,I will not be extruding tubes for a living at a waterslide design company, and will be remaining with Autodesk for another 4 month contract. Good stuff I suppose.

This image was taken by a dude I met on the showfloor. I convinced him to buy 2 seats of sketchbook. I'm a sales guy now.

YouTube Action. Nice head, bud.

It's been a while since anything exciting has happened, artistically, which explains the lack of posting. But, today I have 2 videos up on YouTube.

The first, is a SketchBook promotional video for which I provided all of the sketch work and acted. If its hard to decipher what the product is, think toast and espresso in one convenient package.

Second is a sketch of a character named Vince I have been drawing for almost 10 years now.
Again, this is being used as a Sketchbook promo, presenting tools and techniques for SketchBook 2009, which is to be released on Tuesday.

This one was sped up around 2000% to keep the video short. The actual illustration took just over an hour. Early morning pace.

I'm heading off to Orlando tomorrow morning to attend Photoshop World working again at the wacom booth, demonstrating Sketchbook. Yet, again. Hopefully I'll return with some decent work to pin up. And also a handful of job offer. :P

Digital Painting Tutorial.

I just got an AliasStudio tutorial posted on AliasDesign. It's a pretty standard automotive sketch with the obligatory female model adding to the composition. Turns out that it is the featured tutorial for the month, even though there are 2 other ones that blow me out of the water. Here is the link, and a sample image.

Snowed In

So we got some major snow again today. Haven't seen piles like this since we were building sweet snow forts and tanks way back in the early 90s.

I got a chance to sit down and take a good look through Cosmic Motors, an art and design book from the mind of Daniel Simon. If you are at all interested in design, cars, babes, or sci-fi, then this book is worth every penny. Unbelievable talent, on a similar level as Syd Mead.

Anyway, enough praise for this guy. But check it out.
Here are some images from his website
http://www.danielsimon.net/ and an article from aliasdesign.autodesk.com.

*Unable to post images currently, so here is the trailer for the book.

This was to be the 'cover' image for the March issue of Desktop Engineering Magazine. I now know that there are no covers for Desktop Engineering magazine. I cannot take credit for the 3D elements of this image, as it was sourced from Autodesk internal material. I created the render though (the driver's side of the front end)

The article, which we were informed would be Autodesk exclusive on conceptual design, was a combination of efforts from software types and designers from all over. I did get one image up there though, but being so large, it looked like garbage in reduced format. Oh well, maybe next time.

So to give these images a second shot, here they are:Another image depicting teh use of Showcase. Again, credit for the model of the go-cart does not belong to me. But I took care of the rendering in Showcase and dropped it into a Sketchbook Pro sketch.
This piece was completed for the AliasDesign site as a banner, but it was submitted as a filler.
Not too proud of these guys, but at least they weren't published! A re-working of a sketch I did, apparently before I could draw, of the collaboration between designer and engineer. Mis-shaped heads.
Finally, is another image that was done for other reasons. This made an appearance during the mainstage keynote at Autodesk University in Las Vegas last November.

Here are the links to the article. In 2 parts,

Monday. Boring day at work fixing up Powerpoints for people in Detroit.

Thought I'd post a couple things I came across the other day. I did these 2 a couple years ago, while at school.
Ripofftron. I had just been informed that they would be making a Transformers movie. Needless to say I got pretty excited. This was created on one of the many interesting nights in first year residense.
This was a second year project that got a second life as part of an upcoming article about design.
I'm still waiting to hear if I am getting the cover of Desltop Engineering Magazine.
I'd post the images, but I don't want to get into any legal battles just yet.
Some coupe sketch I did a while back, inspired by the art of Daniel Simon.

Snoopin around on the internet.

Sick in a different way today, I was able to get myself propped in front of the computer. Managed to dig up some videos and images of some of my work in the States.

These both happened to be from CES 2008 in Las Vegas. I'm still looking for clips from:

Siggraph 2007 - San Diego, CA
Autodesk University 2007 - Las Vegas, NV
MacWorld 2008 - San Francisco, CA

This came from the Core77 gallery, with the caption: "CES 2008: Cintiq 12WX, Wacom brought in an ID sketching master to demonstrate the Cintiq 12WX tablet." I don't know who they were talking about, but that sure looks like my hand.

Who is that guy in the black shirt drawing that typical 3/4 perspective orange sports car? The first half of this video features the new tablet from Wacom, which I was promoting. I'm working on the same drawing that is pictured above.

So these two posts don't really show that I was there for 4 days with no breaks. (Aside from leaving ealry on Thursday to Check out AEE 2008. Great move, no joke.) Maybe I'll post a couple pics from that show, if you're lucky.

One day off makes the week go by quickly.

Back to work after a day off sick. Being at home gave me a chance to use an actual pen to draw. And I opened my box of markers for the first time in almost 8 months. Who knew that I would be all digital. I would have bet my life against it or at least a million, that's for sure.

Anyway, here are some things I did. Typical side view marker rendering. Nice to get back into the flow. Still a long way to go.
Saw this gentleman on the train this morning. He was out of it. So, naturally I had to draw him. One detail I failed to capture accurately was his hairpiece slipping down his face.
Those coffee stains are on purpose, as this was used as a filler in a similar gallery at http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com which is the resting place of a lot of my work recently.

Stop sketching. Get back to work.

So this where I type. My job calls for me to draw dome pretty different things, at the same time allowing me to put my ideas on paper right away. Some things get used for internal purposes or not at all.
So this will be my attempt at resurrecting some images that, at one point in time, were the most important thing on my plate.
Let me know what you think. Nothing you say can be as harsh as the general office feedback to which I've become immune.

And random. Attempt to make the skecth move. Inspired by a coworker.

Quick sketch for another hand modelling session. Scars and all.

This one was done for my supervisor as an internal holiday greeting card.
